THE HASHTAG MALLET

The Hashtag Mallet is unique amongst the world of handmade tools, not just among handmade mallets.

Constructed from the worlds finest timbers, meticulously and specifically chosen based on their density, hardness and strength.

The Brass dowel is cut and shaped to fit each mallet individually to ensure that the balance point of each piece is perfect.

The finish is specific to the types of woods being used and differs between each mallet.

WOOD CHOICE

The majority of chisel handles tend to be made from Beech, Ash, Cherry or Maple, with a few notable exceptions.

It is therefore important to choose a material for a mallet head that is harder and denser than your tool handles in order to minimise both compression and damage to your mallet.

By choosing a material with a high specific gravity ( > 1) you can reduce the size of the mallet whilst retaining the weight, balance and durability.

The decision to use rare and exotic woods not only creates something truly unique and bespoke that you won’t find anywhere else, but you'll also have a tool that will be a true joy to use.

BRASS DOWEL

The Brass Dowel adds weight exactly where you want it to be, as well as adding incredible amounts of strength.

The centre of the dowel is left untouched to ensure that a tight square joint is achieved at the transition point.

The portions of the 'tenon' that will be inserted in to the corresponding 'mortise' in the head and handle have multiple grooves turned into them. These serve two purposes.

1. They allow for fine adjustment of weight allocation between the head and the handle of the mallet.

2. They present an increased surface area on which the epoxy resin can create not only a strong chemical bond, but also a strong mechanical bond, ensuring that the mallet head and handle will never come apart during normal use.

Every dowel on every mallet is different and is cut and produced specifically with that mallet size and chosen materials in mind to make sure the balance point is right on that transition.

TRANSITION

The metal ring frames the transition from head to handle and provides a focal point for the centre of gravity of the mallet.

Not only do you have a selection of over 50 different wood species to choose from, you can also choose between four different metallic accents.

Aluminium

Brass

Bronze

Copper

Mokume Gane

And soon hopefully Steel and Damascus!!

Making each mallet completely unique

Each mallet also has a matching makers coin set in the end of the handle.

TOTALLY UNIQUE AND PERSONAL

With so many material options available and each mallet type completely customisable for size/weight...

No two mallets will ever be the same

MY PRODUCTS

I am extremely passionate about all of the projects I’ve worked on, and my hope is that this passion shines through my work. Please take a look at some of my past projects below to get a sense of what I can do.

Whilst all of the below have some average specifications shown on their gallery pages, each and every mallet style can be completely customised to suit your own personal needs.

I have created Square Joiners Mallets in excess of 1.2kg, and Detailing Mallets topping out at 875g. But I have also made joiners mallets than come it at a mere 500g, based on specific requests from the recipient.

Ultimately you are the one who will be using this mallet, let's make sure it is perfect for you.

Every single mallet I make is made to order, using only the finest woods that money can buy, a list of which can be found below...

SQUARE JOINERS MALLET

A Mallet designed for the most labour intensive of tasks. Heavy Morticing, waste removal, bringing joinery together.

This is a mallet built for brute force.

But also for endurance.

The two striking faces are both end grain, and the single piece head construction means that failure due to wood fibre compression is near impossible.

Entirely finished by hand, the chamfers on the head are done with a block plane and files and the head is sanded to 400g using hand pads only to ensure that the head remains as square when finished as when it started!

SQUARE DETAILING MALLET

A smaller, more refined version of the Square Joiners Mallet for the finer tasks that require a steadier approach

Designed to be used in tandem with its larger brother, it also has two ingrain striking faces, so whilst directional control has to be something to be aware of, the compression reduction over its turned sibling is a massive draw for these beauties, and means that can ramp up their abuse more than their turned counterparts!!

Much like the larger mallet, the majority of the shaping and finishing of the head is done by hand with a block plane, carving files and abranet pads to ensure the finish is of as high a quality as it possibly can be!!

TURNED JOINERS MALLET

The 'Jack of All Trades' Mallet

If you were only going to have one mallet, this would be the one to have.

Capable of carrying out heavier tasks than a detailing mallet due to the extra length in its handle, it is also perfectly adapt and balanced to carry out finer detail work by holding the mallet closer to the head.

The rounded nature of the head means this mallet can be used without focus on the direction of travel of the mallet head. Thus reducing the chances of bruising your work.

Suitable for every conceivable workshop task you can throw at a mallet...every workshop should have one of these!!

TURNED DETAILING MALLET

The perfect tool for those jobs that require unprecedented precision

Designed with dovetails in mind, force generation is not the prime goal of these mallets.Instead the focus is on comfort, control, refinement.

Weighted to provide force, with a shorter length to enable greater manoeuvrability around your cabinetry.

This mallet style also comes in two distinct handle designs.

Thin - for those that prefer a sleeker, more slender mallet. Will usually result in a smaller head to ensure balance.

Thick - A recent addition, but by far my most popular option. The thicker handle not only allows for a larger mallet head and therefore a slightly heavier mallet, but the thicker nature of the handle also results in a more relaxed grip, meaning less mistakes and less fatigue over and extended period of time.

TURNED CARVING MALLET

The smallest iteration of the hashtag mallet

Designed primarily for the function of carving and stamping leather, its reduced size and weight allows for extended use without fatigue.

The force necessary to work with leather is far below that of wood, so weight becomes less of a factor. The important thing is to utilise timbers that will resist compression of the mallet face to ensure they last a lifetime.

Whilst these may be super light in comparison to the larger mallets above, they are still heavier than some off the shelf 'woodworking' mallets you can buy.
